A first-person farming horror allegory

Scroll down to learn more

A broken man. An abandoned farm. A sinister presence.

From the creator of The First Tree comes We Harvest Shadows, a first-person narrative game with farming and horror elements. Players take control of Garrett, a transplant from the city who has exiled himself to an abandoned farm for the rest of his life. He thinks the world is better without him in it.

Each new day brings a new to-do list. Players will fix up their house, care for livestock, and improve their farmstead, all while exploring the hundreds of acres surrounding the farm. But in the quiet of the lonely nights, something stirs. Is Garrett truly alone? Or is something stalking him from the shadows?

Taking inspiration both from slow P.T.-style psychological horror games and Edith Finch-style personal first-person titles, this game plays on poignant horror themes to gradually imagine a terrifying vision that Garrett must save himself from—until the soul-shaking end.

Featuring a cinematic soundtrack, gorgeous visuals, and an intimate story, We Harvest Shadows is a gaming experience unlike anything else. It is relaxing yet terrifying. It’s beautiful yet ugly. It’s the type of experience which sits with you for years after the closing credits.

 FAQ

  • It is a single-player first-person open world game with farming, simulation, and horror elements. If you like games like Stardew Valley, Firewatch, The Forest, House Flipper, and Silent Hill 2, you will probably like We Harvest Shadows. (Wow, quite the list!)

  • Your main goal is to build up your farm, and use the earnings to improve your home, tools, and vehicles. As you unlock new tools, new paths will be opened to you on your 500+ acres of land. And each new day brings a new to-do list which earns you money, fleshes out the story, and unlocks new items.

Also, there are no survival game mechanics like hunger, thirst, or an inventory screen. The player’s focus will be on building, exploring, and protecting themselves from threatening entities.

  • This is definitely a horror game, but I’m working really hard to make it unique and atmospheric. The goal is to create a tense yet touching experience for people who are tired of horror gaming clichés. If you like slow-burn drama/horror like Hereditary or The Haunting of Hill House, you will probably like this game.

If you’re wondering if there will be jump scares, there definitely will be some! But I’m more interested in atmosphere and making the jump scares feel earned, as opposed to cheap, loud noises startling the player.

  • It will probably be $20. I’m shooting for a minimum 4 hour story (with lots of extras, like an endless mode).

  • Yes! I’m shooting for 13 languages for the demo and full game (subtitles and interface): English, Spanish, French, German, Italian, Portuguese (Brazil), Russian, Turkish, Polish, Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese, Korean, Japanese

  • No, all positions have been filled, but thank you for your interest. If I do need a contractor, I’ll probably post the position in my email newsletter.

Regarding publishers: I still have a bit of savings left, so I'm planning to self-publish like last time. To be honest, the offer would need to be absolutely stellar for me to change my mind, but I'm not discounting it completely!

  • Nothing official yet, but I’m planning on it!

  • First off, thank you for playing my game and sharing it with your fans! If you go to the Audio tab in the Options and enable the "Replace Copyrighted Music" option before your playthrough, you will have no problems with YouTube's music ID system.

  • I get a lot of help from contractors and asset stores, but other than that, it’s just me. I’m using Unity, Blender, Photoshop, Character Creator 4, Audition, and Studio One to make this game.

  • I’m really sorry, but due to the overwhelming amount of emails I’ve received (and the huge amount of work in front of me), I can’t respond to any messages. If you have comments or questions about the game, please feel free to post on the Steam forums, but I can’t guarantee I’ll be able to respond. However, I do love physical letters since it gives me a break from the computer, and I try to send something back when it's a particularly nice message, so send mail here if you feel so inclined (again, I can't guarantee a response):

  • The most amazing, incredible thing you could do is buy We Harvest Shadows the day it comes out, and leave an honest review on Steam. Thank you for being such amazing supporters, it means the world to me!
